Ancestor Portrait

I actually did this a long time ago; sorry I didn't put it up earlier!

Anyway, this was an assignment for a drawing class. We were told to draw a portrait of one of our ancestors, but the teacher was kind enough to allow us to make up our own ancestors if we thought it'd make it more interesting.

So here he is - Njáll Fiskimarðr, "Njall the Fish Gatherer," a Dane from the 9th Century known for his size and strength, as well as his talent for fishing, able to catch more trout than any other man in his village.

I used myself as a base, and added the beard, hair and helmet with reference pictures (have you ever punched "beard" into Google? It can be quite amusing).

This picture is dedicated to my buddy Marshall, whose passion is Germanic and Nordic languages, and who inspired me to draw this.
